Widecombe Church

The Widecombe Church in Widecombe, Devon is known as the "Cathedral of the Moor" due to its large size in such a small village on Dartmoor.


The church, aka the church of St Pancras, was struck by lightning during a severe storm in 1638 resulting in the deaths of four parishioners with many people injured.

Anchor Square Bristol

Anchor Square, near Bristol Harbour in Bristol, is a pleasant open space that contains the @Bristol Science Centre and Planetarium.

Anchor Square contains a number of popular restaurants and bars including the Firehouse Rotisserie for gourmet Californian-style pizzas and the Latin American eatery Las Iguanas (Tel: 0117 927 6233), a large UK chain which started out small in Bristol in 1991.

Bristol Harbour

Bristol grew as a port city from the 13th century on the tidal reaches of the River Avon. From the 16th century after the voyages of John Cabot to North America, the port grew as a centre for trade with America with tobacco and slaves the main cargoes in the city's ships.

Nowadays Bristol's main port is further down the Avon at the docks in Avonmouth and Portbury and the original harbour is mainly a tourist and residential centre with such attractions as
Pero's Bridge, the Arnolfini art gallery and the @Bristol Science Museum.

Other attractions are Isambard Kingdom Brunel's SS Great Britain and a modern reconstruction of the Matthew - John Cabot's ship which took him and his crew to Newfoundland in 1497.
