Killerton House was built in 1778-9 as a home for the Acland family, one of Devon's oldest families. In 1944, Sir Richard Acland "gave away" Killerton to the National Trust and used the proceeds to further his political beliefs. Sir Richard Acland was a devoted socialist and one of the founders of the British Commonwealth Party.

Killerton features a beautiful garden, created by John Veitch, with rhododendrons, magnolias and rare trees. The surrounding Devon countryside (see below) is picturesque.

Visitors to Killerton can enjoy the historic fashion exhibition 'Elegance' which explores the fabulous and luxurious dress of the past 200 years. Visitors to Killerton can also enjoy the sites in nearby Exeter such as Exeter Cathedral, Rougemont Castle, etc.

Killerton is located off the Exeter-Cullompton road (B3181).
